Small nursery ideas...the before and the after

Planning the Nursery...

So the nursery is finally ready for the little man's appearance.  It has been really good fun decorating the baby's bedroom and I spent a reasonable amount of time thinking carefully about how I wanted it to look and researching nursery products online. The only thing left to do is order a cot top changer for changing the baby on. Better get a wriggle on then..!

Pinterest

Pinterest is a great website for collating all your ideas online and a virtual pinboard. It allows you to organise and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. You can browse boards created by other people to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests. People use boards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and share their favorite recipes.

I effectively created a mood board of how I wanted the nursery to look and any great products that I found I 'pinned' to my board. Many websites and blogs now have the 'pin it' option although you may often find it under a button called 'Share' where it gives you a selection of social media categories to choose from.

Choosing a theme

You may decide that you want to create a theme for your nursery. This is great if you already know the sex of your baby but if you are waiting for a surprise then you will probably want to go for a more neutral but fun theme instead.

As I knew we were having a boy I opted for a traditional blue and white colour scheme with a splash of red to brighten it up. I decided to choose items that would grow with baby and not look out of place in a young boys bedroom. These included cot quilt and pillow, bunting, Twinkle Town bus night light, storage tub and light switch cover. After all, it can get quite expensive decorating a nursery so the longer you can make use of the things you have invested in the better!

Try googling 'nursery themes' for some inspiration and have a look at the images that come up. There are some fab ideas out there and some really wacky ones too for those brave enough to go for them!

Working with a small space

As our nursery is a fairly small room we had to plan carefully around the space as still wanted it to look and feel light and airy without too much clutter.

  • I have found that when space is limited, going with white furniture and pastel coloured walls makes a huge difference to the way a room looks and feels as it maximises and bounces the light as well as looking cool and contemporary. If you're worried about it looking 'cold' you can always warm it up with your room accessories in order to inject some colour.

  • We opted for a cot as opposed to a cotbed this time round which has proved to be a great space saver. However, we did this as my three year old daughter is in a white toddler bed that we will be able to pass onto baby when he is old enough and Grace is ready for a bigger bed. You may prefer to go with a cotbed so that you can convert it when the time is right in order to save on cost.

  • For extra storage, I invested in an under-cot storage drawer - great for bedding and blankets. The space under you cot/cotbed is effectively dead space so it's worthwhile thinking about how you can utilise it. Remember though to check the height and width available before making your purchase as sizes can vary.

  • A cot top changer is another great space saving option as opposed to trying to squeeze in a stand alone unit. While baby sleeps in your room in its moses basket or crib, you can leave the changer up on top of the cot for nappy changes and dressing.

  • I was delighted when I found the small white rocking chair in Dwell which is perfect for the nursery. I have never had the luxury of one previously as could only ever find the big rockers that took up far too much space for what we had to work with.  If using a rocker or chair, try placing it at an angle rather than straight on for a less formal look.

  • You may want to consider putting shelves or corner shelves up in the room if you are struggling for floor space. These are great for placing pictures or books on, although I wouldn't advise putting them directly above the cot in case something falls off.

  • Invest in a good sized storage tub or toy box if you have room for it. These are great for tidying away toys and keeping your room clutter free!

  • If you're working with a tight budget try looking at eBay for some real bargains. I got my nearly new curtain tiebacks for £3.50 as opposed to the £25.00 it would have cost me if I had gone to Mamas & Papas direct! Bigger items such as furniture are normally for collection in person but still most definitely work a look and could save you a fortune.

Below are some images of the accessories I chose for the baby's room. Click on the title for a direct link to the retailers websites.  Whether you're having a girl/boy or a surprise(!) they are worth checking out as all have a great range of room ideas to suit you!

Hotmilk Lingerie...Nursing Bras for Hot Mamas!

Having trawled the rails of various stores stocking maternity bras I was disappointed to see such a lack of imagination that had been put into them. Most were plain and functional in white or black and had all the sex appeal of a sports bra. Surely, just because women chose to breastfeed their babies didn't mean they had to kiss goodbye to beautiful underwear for the duration? Where was the fun in that?!

I decided to try a different route and so took to the internet to see if I could find some beautiful nursing lingerie that took the frump out of feeding....

It was then that I came across the rather amusingly (and memorably) entitled BoobieMilk website that stocked gorgeous Hotmilk nursing bras, along with a good range of other labels and offered a fantastic service to boob, I mean boot!

BoobieMilk is a Mummy run business providing in-home nursing bra fittings in and around Kent. Nursing bras and accessories are also available for purchase at www.boobiemilk.co.uk to be delivered to the whole of the UK.

Having given her my size, Karen offered to come to my home to give me a free fitting on a selection of beautiful bras. It was such a relief to be able to go through them in the comfort of my own living room rather than having to march around town on a fruitless search for pretty but practical lingerie (not ideal when you're eight months pregnant)!

The bra I opted for was a beautiful champagne colour (and shown above), with pretty lace full cup and wire-free with A-frame support (available in B-H cup sizes). It had six back eye settings meaning you could adjust it to fit during pregnancy and nursing and the cotton lining felt lovely and soft against my skin. For extra glamour it has a satin bow detail with a small diamante drop centre making it feel incredibly luxurious.

I also ended up buying a couple of unbelievably comfortable Emma-Jane bras for night time feeding. Okay, these bras are not going to win any 'Sexiest Bra of the Year' awards but in terms of being practical and offering excellent support and comfort for nursing and sleeping in, these are a hands down winner and incredibly affordable at only £10.00 each!

Karen also brought with her a range of great Hotmilk nursing vests. As they offer the same support and functionality of a bra they can be worn either under a cardigan or non-nursing top during the day or as an alternative to a bra and nightie at night time. The one I chose was super flattering as was fitted around the bust but flowed loosely over the bump area so perfect as a maternity top or to hide the inevitable post pregnant tummy while you work on getting your figure back!

If you live within an hour of Sevenoaks, Kent, you can book an appointment with Karen to travel to your home which I highly recommend! This is a unique service that I didn't know was available until now and although you can just buy online, there is nothing that beats actually seeing the bras up close and getting to try them on first if you can.

This is what Karen from BoobieMilk has to say:

"Bringing a new life into this world can be exhausting and an emotional time.  You may also be on bed rest, or just not want to take the baby outside yet.  An in-home nursing bra fitting can be the perfect answer.  You can arrange for me to come to your house at a pre-arranged time to fit your bras in the comfort of your home.  You can take your time to try on different styles without the pressures of being in a store, and I can even make you a cup of tea while you nurse your newborn.  If you decide for any reason that the bra you have chosen is not the one for you, I can come right back to deliver the right one."

I will definitely be using her service again in future and hooray for Hotmilk - thanks for giving women that breastfeed the chance to feel fabulous at the same time!

Cozie Warmers microwaveable slipper boots review & giveaway...say goodbye to cold feet...Giveaway now closed

And the lucky winner of the slipper boots is....Sophie Hedley!  Congratulations Sophie. x

Apparently we are heading for the coldest winter in a hundred years this winter...Cue the woolly jumpers and endless cups of hot chocolate then..! One side effect of the colder months for me is miserably cold feet. Even with the heating on and thicker socks, I still can't seem to get them warm at times and have spent many a night unable to get to sleep whilst ineptly trying to defrost them with a hot water bottle gripped between my ankles.

Those days are now thankfully a thing of the past for my poor feet as I was lucky enough to stumble across a pair of microwaveable slipper boots while out shopping one day - something I hadn't heard of before.

If you suffer from cold feet or poor circulation - you will love these! Simply pop these super furry slipper boots in the microwave for no more than 2 minutes (check instructions for guidelines) then snuggle down and enjoy their soothing warmth and comfort.  It's pure heaven!  Filled with natural grains and gently scented with French lavender they do wonders for soothing tired and aching feet.

These would make a perfect present for either yourself or a friend or loved one at Christmas time too. Last week I was sent a pair of these gorgeous cream slipper boots by a fab company called Cozie Warmers. Cozie Warmers are a small family business that specialise in a range of great products designed to keep you warm. I will be reviewing some of their baby products next week! 20 days to D-Day...!

Yesterday was the day of my appointment to see the obstetrician. It was a significant day as I finally found out the date our baby son would be born after 36 weeks of waiting.

My appointment was booked for 10.10 a.m. and I woke to a grey, rainy morning from a light, grumpy sleep, exhausted as both my children had taken it in turns to wake in the night. My son arrived first complaining of a sore throat and wanting a cuddle. Cue the Calpol and Brett's exit to see the night out in Joshua's racing car bed followed by an hour or so attempting to get both Joshua and I back to sleep. I finally drifted off only to be awoken half an hour later by Grace bursting into the room having had a bad dream, insisting on a cuddle and not entertaining the thought of going back to her own bed. Two fitful hours sleep later and it was time to get up.  I lay there for a moment looking at my sleepy children, trying to imagine how I would deal with the same scenario and a baby thrown into the mix...I greeted myself with a hard gulp and chose to leave the thought alone!

After dragging myself out of bed I dusted off the cobwebs with a hot shower whilst attempting to draw on the things I'd learned from my 'Buddhism for Mothers' book...'Realise you have the power to choose your emotional responses' I recounted... I took a few deep breaths and shook off the grumpiness that my lack of sleep was causing me, after all it wasn't my children's fault and choosing to be irritable was not going to help them or me.

The one good thing was that my parents had offered to take me to the hospital for my appointment so Mum could be an extra pair of ears for me as Brett was at work.  Much to my relief they arrived early as Mum was keen to take Joshua to school - something she hadn't done before. They entered the house to a whirlwind of activity in the Goodyear household as I busily rushed around organising breakfast for Joshua, Grace and Lolita (Joshua's classmate who I take to school some mornings) whilst the children chatted excitedly, full of the joys of spring at the breakfast table.

Twenty five minutes later, coats on and bags and packed lunches in hand they left the house and I gratefully breathed in the silence as I closed the door behind them, before allowing myself some time for a calming camomile tea and bowl of cereal whilst catching up on a little Hollywood gossip on Daybreak.

By the time my parents arrived back, the breakfast dishes had been cleared and the kitchen and dining room had been restored to their previous tidy state. I ran upstairs to finish getting ready before we left for the hospital. I felt excited and full of anticipation as Dad dropped us off at the entrance and Mum and I rushed in looking a bit like tweedle dum and tweedle dee in our matchy matchy black outfits and blonde hair (purely an error on my behalf as I dressed hurriedly in one of the few outfits that seemed to fit me!).

We took our seats in the bustling waiting room and I was amused to see that most of the other heavily pregnant women there were wearing the same black uniform as myself, no doubt also drawing on an increasingly limited selection of flattering clothing. My name pinged up quickly on the large flatscreen and after taking my blood pressure I was ushered into a room with Mum at my side to meet the obstetrician. This was a different chap to the one I had met way back at my 21 week appointment and with a soft foreign accent I couldn't decipher he slowly ran through with me what would be involved during my c-section procedure. The good news was that he wasn't unduly worried by my lower than normal blood platelet count but said it would need closely monitoring nonetheless. He spent a good five to ten minutes riffling through my huge wad of disorganised looking notes from my previous pregnancies trying to search for the details of Grace's birth. He eventually gave up and it struck me how at odds this rather old-fashioned paper based filing system seemed in contrast to the glossy, modernness of the Pembury hospital. Where was his screen and online notes I wondered?

We followed with a quick scan of the baby and listened to the heartbeat before being sent to see Bernie the midwife to book in the baby's birth day. She handed over the piece of paper with the date on '11th December 2012'.... I stared at the date excitedly. 'This is it' I thought, although she did go on to say there was a small risk the date could change if they have a flood of emergencies. I am remaining hopeful though that is not the case and that 3 weeks today, I will be sat in my hospital bed with my family around me with my one day old baby in my arms....not long now.

The benefits of using a silk pillowcase...a beauty secret worth knowing

Last Christmas my Mum presented me with a beautifully wrapped silk pillowcase.  I had been complaining that I was often waking up with dreaded sleep creases across my face (normally reserved for my favourite sleeping side) which in later years seemed to take an increasing amount of time to disappear and would invariably spread from my eye down the side of my cheek. This was usually also combined with the rather attractive 'bed head' look which would require some vigorous brushing to smooth back into place. Not a great way to start the day and so much for 'beauty sleep'!

Mum had been advocating the anti-ageing benefits of using a silk pillowcase for a couple of years and considering how fabulous she looks, any beauty advice she does give I tend to take seriously! She eventually decided to treat me to my very own little piece of beauty luxury (no doubt to quieten my whinging!).

What are the benefits of using a silk pillowcase?

As well as feeling beautifully soft next to my skin and also cool and luxurious, the most noticeable difference when using my new pillowcase was the complete absence of sleep lines.  This in itself felt like a major triumph as I knew consistent sleep creases probably wasn't helping the ageing process!

The other major benefit was my hair.  I no longer looked like I'd been dragged through a hedge backwards. The pillowcase was definitely becoming my new 'beauty sleep' best friend.

There has of course been lots of research into the benefits of sleeping on silk and here's what some of the experts have to say:

Dr. Samuel J. Stegman - Dermatologic Surgeon

In 1987 Dr. Stegman's hallmark work on sleep wrinkles proved that the muscular region of the face known as the "underlying superficial muscular aponeurotic system" (SMAS) was damaged by pillow contact. He found a correlation between the location of the underlying SMAS and sleep lines. This particular manifestation of ageing disappears in the morning in teenagers but will persist longer and longer as we age. Many people in their forties and fifties maintain the sleep crease throughout the day. Dr Stegmans conclusion was attempting to change sleep pattern, i.e. sleeping on your back - but this is often more difficult than it sounds as we don't know how we move in our sleep.  As there is this correlation between the SMAS and sleep lines it makes sense to sleep on the softest, most purest pillows and pillowcases available and that is silk covered Silk floss filled pillows and silk charmeuse pillowcases.

Dr. Dennis Gross - Dermatologist

Persistently pressing our faces into a pillow causes trauma to the skin. Over time, this trauma, aggravated by the friction of a cotton pillowcase, can create permanent creases as our collagen breaks down.

Dr Sobel - Dermatologist

Dr Sobel - (New York Magazine's top Dermatologist five years in a row) gives this advice - "Long the secret of film divas, silk pillowcases prevents facial skin from creasing during the night and allows the skin to glide along the pillow so the face rests comfortably without placing pressure on creased skin, effectively "ironing in" wrinkles."

Other benefits:

Haircare

Hair products often tout silk content in their products, or claim that hair will feel "silky smooth." Because silk contains proteins hair follicles need, silk should create a softer and more nourishing sleeping surface for one's hair. Some silk pillow companies state that silk also helps rid "morning bed head" because these proteins are anti-frizz and trap less body heat than other fabrics. Also, rougher fabrics may break strands of hair when sleepers toss and turn at night.

Allergies and Cleanliness

Silk doesn't collect dust mites and house mites like other pillow surfaces. One company claims that the protein sericin repels mites and fungi, making for a cleaner sleeping surface for sufferers of asthma and other allergies. Pure silk is naturally mildew resistant and is very durable.

Easy Care

Silk pillowcases can be gently machine-washed. Silk dries very quickly compared to cotton.

Where to buy:

After deciding I wanted to do a post on the benefits of using a silk pillowcase I did some research online to find a good supplier. The one company that really impressed me was Cliffton Silks.

For their website click here: http://www.silkgifts.co.uk/

This is what they have to say:

'Before 2001 we had spent many years sourcing silk from all over the world to find the right one – after discussions with top skin and hair specialists we were told that it was Silk Charmeuse that was the silk to use – because of the way it is weaved - it produces a soft lustre texture that is more beneficial to sleep on with regards to the skin and hair - you need this type of weave to enable your face and hair to glide across the pillowcase whilst asleep causing less friction therefore less damage.

We have our silk especially weaved for us in China to ensure the process involves no added chemicals or dyes and with a superior weight of 25 momme – Our products are exclusive to this site - they are all hand-made in England finished with French seams - no foreign labour is used.'

Cliffton Silks kindly sent me one of their beautiful pillowcases to try out. It came wrapped in ivory tissue paper with a luxurious black ribbon bow. The pillowcase inside was wonderfully soft with a 7 inch pillow retainer to stop the pillow from falling out.

They retail at £24.00 including free postage and packing.  A small price to pay for the anti-ageing benefits you get in return! They come in ivory, cream, black or red. They will also make a perfect Christmas gift either for yourself or a loved one and are not just for the ladies - men need some help too after all!

So what are you waiting for....bring a little luxury into your life and sleep crease free!

Countdown....

So here we are in the last month of pregnancy. There's 4 weeks to go till D-Day and it's starting to feel like a stagger to the finish line.

The middle of the night dash to the loo has just started to creep in. This is invariably then followed by an unwelcome period of wakefulness which caught me the other night slipping downstairs at 3 a.m. for a cup of camomile tea and a bowl of porridge. I have even tried doing a meditation mantra in my head to get me back to sleep but apparently you're meant to do that when there are no disturbances and all is quiet - not easy then when bump decides to start busting some moves or your husband starts a gentle snore, whilst you resist the urge to poke him in the ear.

Walking any distance is also not as fun at the moment. I had to pop into town yesterday and managed half an hour and two shops. This was of course all done with a strained look on my face and what felt like a boulder strapped to my waist. Oh the joys!

I also went for my midwife appointment yesterday. I am ashamed to admit that it was my third rearrangement as my pregnancy brain had meant I had forgotten to attend the two weeks previously. This is still remarkable to me considering I remembered last Wednesday right up to an hour before. I left my friend's house at 3 p.m. and as she waved me off she said "Don't forget to go to your appointment this time!", "I won't forget" I hollered back as I got in the car "It's only in an hour!" But guess what? Forget I did. All it took was a trip to the drycleaners in between to pick up some curtains for the nursery and that was it.  I actually only remembered when she jokingly texted me two hours later to ask how I got on or did I forget? Oh the shame..

Thankfully I didn't forget yesterday and luckily I have a very understanding midwife who when poking her head around the door to call my name couldn't conceal her look of surprise that I was actually there this time! I had managed to get a blood test done with the nurse prior to the appointment as it appeared there were some anomalies with my last results at 29 weeks. As well as low iron levels which were now being boosted with iron tablets, I was also suffering from a lower than average platelet count. This is not ideal when considering that a c-section is a fairly major procedure and you need a good platelet count for your blood to be able to clot properly. As we looked over the test results it appeared that my platelet count had dropped even further from around 140 to 111...

If they stay at this level it shouldn't be a major concern but I apparently need to be monitored more closely now and am booked in for another blood test in two weeks. I will also get the opportunity to discuss this during my obstetric appointment next week. It looks like the worse case scenario would be a platelet transfusion at the point of delivery but I'm not even going to think down that road yet and fingers crossed it will all be fine.

The good news is that baby is happy and unaffected by all of this and is already head down and getting ready for his big debut. He's not going to be a huge baby by the feel of him according to the midwife but a good healthy weight nonetheless. I dashed straight from my appointment to pick my six year old son up from school. Whilst merrily chatting I thought I'd give him an update. "So," I said, "I've just been to see the midwife and she had a feel of the baby in Mummy's tummy. She thinks he's going to be about 7 pounds when he's born." A look of surprise and concern spread across Joshua's face "What?...We're going to have to PAY for the baby?!" I think he was reassured by my burst of laughter. "Noooo." I chortled, "That's how much he'll weigh darling!" I'll never forget his look of relief. Bless him! :)

Grace's Autumn/Winter Wardrobe by Next

Clothes by Next and Wellies by Clarks

I have been lucky enough to have had many beautiful clothes donated to us for Grace over the last three years and have also picked up some real bargains at various NCT nearly new sales as well, but as winter approaches, I realised her wardrobe needed a bit of an update.

Next currently have a gorgeous range of girls clothes divided into 'young girls' (3mth-6yrs) and older girls (3-16yrs). As Grace is a fairly active child, a good selection of leggings is an essential part of her wardrobe, which can be teamed with pretty tops and boots. I also love her in little denim or cord skirts and tights and cute denim dresses for the ultimate cool, casual look.

When planning her wardrobe, I like to make sure I buy a range of items that will compliment each other, for example a skirt or dress that can be worn with a variety of tops and tights to keep the look fresh. I was obviously in a 'red' mood when I shopped this day (!) but red is also a fantastic colour as an autumn/winter bright and can be toned down with more neutral colours (as shown).

What to pack in my hospital bag...

Bag by Anne Klein at TK Maxx

Hard to believe I'm in week 34 already!  This pregnancy feels like it's zooming by.  We are getting there though. I am now officially on maternity leave and apart from finishing up a few bits and bobs work wise I'm pretty much done!

Last weekend Mum and Dad kindly had the children for the weekend so we could get down to the job of sorting out the nursery. We had already bought the cot so it was a case of cleaning and a new lick of paint for the room and putting the cot and accessories up.  There are still a few finishing touches that need doing but when it's all done I will post the photos on my blog.  Watch this space...!

In the meantime, I have been slowly getting around to thinking about the all important hospital bag and what I should be packing in it. I haven't packed it yet but it's now time to have the list of essentials ready so I can start getting organised.

First of all though, I have been on the hunt for a good holdall to take to the hospital.  The only bag I did have that fitted the job was Brett's smelly black gym bag which I didn't really fancy putting the baby's things in! I did some fairly extensive searching online but it was a purposeful trip to TK Maxx that resulted in me finding this great holdall.

It's incredibly roomy with an internal zip pocket as well as two further external zip pockets on the side - perfect for toiletries or nappies etc. I also loved that it had a pull out handle so no heavy lugging if you don't want to and after having a c-section this will make life easier when leaving the hospital as I can pull the bag and my husband can carry the car seat and baby.  It comes in this lovely grey and silver design or they also do it in burgundy.

So...what to pack.

For me:

  • Hospital notes - very important!
  • Two loose fitting, comfortable maternity nighties (particularly important for after c-section)
  • Socks and slippers
  • A lightweight dressing gown
  • Lip balm
  • Face wipes
  • Hairbands
  • Cartons of juice or bottles of water
  • Healthy snacks
  • Toiletries - cleanser, toner, moisturiser, shower gel, shampoo and conditioner and cotton wool pads.
  • Spare toothbrush and paste (so you can pack it in advance)
  • Tissues
  • 7 pairs of maternity pants
  • Maternity pads
  • Lansinoh cream for breastfeeding - if you plan to breastfeed, this for me is essential so you don't get sore.
  • Hairbrush and towel
  • Make-up and remover
  • Two nursing bras and breastpads
  • Some loose change (about £10 should be enough)
  • Laundry bag for dirty clothes
  • Comfy clothes for my few days in hospital - two pairs of loose fitting maternity trousers and a few breastfeeding tops.
  • UGG boots for any hospital wanders and for leaving
  • My camera! I am going to take my professional camera this time. The first photos of Joshua and Grace were taken on a compact camera and Blackberry! Not great quality so determined to get some decent shots of little man this time round.
  • Mobile phone - I will need to check the policy on this as some hospitals don't like them being used but if anything will be good for a few cheeky videos of baby's first day.
  • iPad and charger - my best friend while stuck in my hospital bed for a few days.
  • A few books/magazines - Buddhism for Mothers will be on the list!
  • Pen and paper
  • My husband can apparently stay overnight on the first night on a camp bed which will be a real help. A pillow, blanket and change of clothes for him then.
  • A gift for Joshua and Grace from their little brother (to make them feel special too)

For baby:
  • A pack of newborn nappies
  • A pack of cotton wool balls for nappy changes
  • Nappy cream - I was advised not to use this when Joshua was born by the midwife. I have since gone against this advice as will never forget how upset I felt when I gently wiped his increasingly sore looking bottom and it actually bled. He was clearly in pain and I felt cross that I had not followed my instincts. I used Bepanthen nappy cream ointment and it really helped.
  • A towel
  • Six sleepsuits
  • Six vests
  • A cardigan
  • Socks
  • Hat
  • Blanket
  • A winter all-in-one suit for leaving hospital - it will be December after all.
  • A pack of muslin cloths
  • A pack of disposable bibs or six cloth bibs
  • A soft toy suitable for newborns.

I think that about covers it!

Tip: Make sure you write your list down and tick it off as you go along so you know you have everything. Keep it safe with your bag.

Halloween Chocolate Party Cake - a spin on Jamie Oliver's 'Party Cake' Recipe

I recently attended my friend's son's 4th birthday party for which she had made him a delicious chocolate party cake. It suddenly occurred to me that I had never actually made a cake with my children before! Okay, well not strictly true. I had made some of those instant 'packet' fairy cakes with them once or twice but that hardly makes me Nigella Lawson now does it.

I felt bad. How could I have gone six years without making a cake?! I have fond memories of being a child and getting great pleasure from making cakes with my own Mum and yet somehow I had still to tick this off my 'what makes me a domestic goddess' list! Oops!

I therefore recruited the help of my said 'domestic goddess' friend in showing me how to make a cake with the children and her own little boy. I must not be getting out much these days because I could barely contain my excitement as I rushed around the supermarket buying the ingredients!

Cake Recipe:

3-rounded tbsp Cocoa Powder
200g/7oz Caster Sugar
200g/7oz Butter
3 Large Eggs, preferably free-range
200g/7oz Self-Raising Flour, sifted
1 rounded tsp Baking Powder

Chocolate Topping:

100g/3 ¾ oz Butter
100g/3 ¾ oz best quality Plain Chocolate
(I used 300g Silver Spoon Chocolate Flavour Cake Covering!)
100g/3 ¾ oz Icing Sugar
3 tbsp Milk
Pack of Large Chocolate Buttons
Pack of Royal Icing Halloween Cake Decorations from Sainsburys (optional!)

Buttercream Filling

450g Betty Crocker Chocolate Buttercream Icing (used as pregnant and doesn't contain raw egg)

1.   Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas 4.

2.   Line the bases of 2 x 20cm/8" cake tins with greased greaseproof paper.

3.   Mix the cocoa powder with 4tbsp of boiling water until smooth.

4.   In a separate bowl, whisk the sugar and butter until fluffy, add the cocoa mixture, eggs, flour and
      baking powder.

5.   Mix well and divide between the baking tins.

6.  When working with children, licking the rest of the cake mixture from the bowl is compulsory!

7.   Place in the preheated oven and bake for about 25 minutes (a skewer inserted into the centre should
      come out clean when cooked).

8.   Allow to cool then remove from tins.

9.   Melt the chocolate topping ingredients in a bowl over some lightly simmering water. Stir until
blended well and allow to cool.

10. To assemble the cake, remove the greaseproof paper from both sponges.

11. Spread the buttercream over one of the sponges.

12. Sandwich the second sponge on top and press down.

13.  Run a knife around the edge of the cake to smooth if off and drizzle over your chocolate topping.

14. Allow the chocolate topping to firm up slightly before decorating with chocolate buttons and
     halloween decorations and enjoy!

Important - WHAT NOT TO DO!

1.  Do not leave your domestic goddess friend's house with sponges in tins as it got too late to finish the
cake and then forget about them and leave the sponges sat on the side to dry out for four hours.

2. Do not try and make up for it by slathering one of your sponges in so much buttercream that it oozes
uncontrollably out the sides and then put all of the excess in your mouth. Warning - this will cause
extreme sugar rush and instant nausea!

3. Do not take the now 'not as moist as they should be' sponges to your Mum's house, forgetting the
recipe for how to finish the cake topping.

4. Do not then proceed to throw away the only instructions you DO have on the wrapper of the Silver
Spoon chocolate covering, slam the chocolate (minus the butter and milk) into the microwave and
    'hope for the best'.

5. Certainly do not then pour the melted 'yummy' incredibly sickly milk chocolate onto your
cake minus the butter and milk so that it instantly and 'surprisingly' sets rock hard like 'Ice Magic' on
    top!

6. Finally, do not get offended when your parents critique your cake as 'delicious' but perhaps a bit 'dry'
and 'sickly' and hard to cut 'even with an electric carving knife'.

On the up side, the kids LOVED it! :)
